Energy Recruiters (ERI) has been retained by a diversified & growing energy company to support their search for a Chief Operating Officer (COO). This newly created role is a critical investment in the future. The Chief Operating Officer will hold business unit-level accountability for a portfolio of companies and lead the overall execution of operational strategies and plans to deliver results through day-to-day operational protocols. The COO will design, plan, and implement business strategies and procedures to ensure operational excellence, long-term growth, sustainability, and profitability of the enterprise. You will report to the Chief Executive Officer.   The organization is headquartered on the West Coast and your relocation will be supported.   Travel expectations will be approximately 50% to support multiple operating companies in the surrounding regions.

 

ESSENTIAL ROLE FUNCTIONS

Operational Leadership

Strategically lead cross-functional teams at multiple operating companies to break down barriers, develop genuine trust, and drive operational excellence while leading by example as a key champion for the Team’s values.

Lead execution of operational strategies, including developing scalable processes that deliver the financial, cost, quality, safety, staffing, and service levels required to meet both short-term and long range business objectives and customer expectations while ensuring financial strength and operating effectiveness.

Ensure local site and shared services objectives and outcomes align with and deliver results specific to the Company’s strategic objectives and projected growth.

Successfully lead and engender the trust of their most significant operations asset, people. Develop, motivate, and lead operations and leadership teams and multiple operating companies.

 

Operating Analytics and Performance

Meet or exceed performance expectations as related to such KPIs as gallons delivered, gross margins, operating expense per gallon, fuel deliveries per mile, fuel supply reliability and timeliness, team member turnover, service quality scores, safety and compliance performance, and customer service scores.

Use data driven, fact-based decisions to maximize integrated profitability while participating as a key leader in budget development and capital planning.

Develop and manage long-range, annual plans through an accurate and experience-based understanding of the P&L, complex operational financial planning, and accounting principles.

Strategically and constantly monitor the competitive landscape and market conditions to identify opportunities, issues, and risks in support of recommending relevant tactics and strategies, as well as delivering measurable impacts.

Leverage network of relationships to support business development efforts and recruit and retain top industry talent.

Represent the organization and operating companies with integrity and credibility at industry and community events.

 

Quality Control & Procedures

Working in conjunction with Safety and Compliance, implement, analyze, and optimize quality standards.

Develop and implement standard operating procedures for fuel delivery for marine, commercial and residential customers

Monitor and maintain best practices

 

People & Culture Leadership

Ensure that the responsibilities, authorities, and accountability of all direct subordinates are defined and understood.

Serve as a leader and role model creating a proactive and empowering culture where employees are trained, equipped, empowered, and driven to succeed.

Serve as champion for optimal talent recruiting and retention in operations. Work with HR teams to engage in operations-based workforce planning, succession planning, early-stage leadership development, and training programs, as well as to develop a culture that results in greater retention.

Work with direct reports to identify proper structure to leverage talent and capabilities throughout the operating companies while identifying, coaching, and mentoring current and future leaders to provide for capable management succession.

Deepen relationships and opportunities with related companies.

 

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, and SKILLS

MBA or equivalent degree in operations management, engineering or related field, logistics, and/or equivalent industry experience.

Minimum 20 years’ experience in the fuel distribution industry; 5+ years at the director-level or above.

Minimum ten years’ progressive corporate management experience.

Experience leading large, multi-site and/or multi-company delivery operations.

Knowledge of markets including current and future market potential, competitive and external factors, e.g., political, social, economic, etc.

Network of relationships in fuel and lubricants distribution business that can be put to work to advance strategy—people, customers, etc.

Highly organized and ability to prioritize workload

Proven business acumen, project development, strategic planning and execution skills

Interest & ability to dive into details; work through complex problems without losing sight of big picture

Collaborative, team-oriented and a team builder; a humble, servant leader mindset

Knowledge, experience, and skills to be an effective leader and the ability to manage, influence, mentor and create trust at all levels of the organization

Proven and demonstrated record of success in the development and progression of employees

Commitment to safety and compliance

Effective oral and written communicator

Strong negotiation skills

Able to deal with difficult, stressful, and/or emergency situations in positive, effective and expedient manner

Ability to analyze, understand and interpret accounting and financial information

Proficient dealing with state and federal agencies
